On August 1, 2008, the Johnston County Board of Education will implement a 100% tobacco-free schools policy. The policy prohibits all tobacco use by everyone, anywhere on school property, at all times - which includes school events that occur after school hours. This policy applies to students, school district employees, parents, and the general public. It also prohibits anyone from bringing tobacco products on school property.
The purpose for adopting this policy is twofold. First, the action will support families in helping to prevent tobacco addiction among our youth. Ninety percent of adults who are now habitual tobacco users began before the age of 18, with the average age of initiation being between 12 and 14 years old. Keeping tobacco off school property means students have less opportunity to see their friends and teachers using tobacco, as well as less access to tobacco products.
The NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund provides funding to assist teens, staff, and parents who are tobacco users to quit smoking. The toll-free number for North Carolina Tobacco Use Quitline is 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669).
